What is Superannuation in Australia?

Superannuation, or “super,” is Australia’s way of helping workers save for retirement. It has evolved from a basic pension system to a compulsory savings plan benefiting millions.

In 1909, the Aged Pension was introduced, offering financial support for retirees. In 1915, tax incentives encouraged super savings by making investment earnings tax-free and employer contributions tax-deductible.

In 1986, the government and unions agreed on a 3% employer super contribution instead of a pay rise, expanding super coverage. By 1991, 68% of workers had super.

The 1992 Superannuation Guarantee (SG) was introduced with a required 3% employer contribution. This increased coverage to 80% by 1993.

In the 2000s, Australians gained fund choice and flexible retirement options. The SG has since increased, reaching 11.5% in July 2024, ensuring stronger retirement savings for workers.

Superannuation is now a retirement savings system in Australia where contributions are made to help individuals save money for their future. This ensures they have funds to live on after they retire.

Types of Superannuation Contributions

There are different types of super contributions, each with its own tax rules. These include concessional contributions, personal deducted contributions, non-concessional contributions, personal undeducted contributions, and Superannuation Guarantee (SG) contributions.

1. Concessional Contributions

Superannuation concessional contributions are contributions made into your super account before tax is paid. These include employer contributions (like SG) and salary-sacrificed amounts.

The key feature is that they are taxed at a lower rate, usually 15%, when added to your super fund. This rate is generally lower than your regular income tax rate.

The total concessional contributions cap for the 2024-25 financial year is $30,000.

2. Personal Deducted Contributions

Similar to concessional contributions, these are personally deducted contributions you make to your super fund using your own income.

You can also claim a tax deduction for them. For example, if you are self-employed or a contractor, you can make contributions to your super and claim them as a tax deduction on your tax return.

Once these contributions enter the fund, they are taxed at a concessional rate of 15%, just like concessional contributions.

non concessional contributions

3. Non-Concessional Contributions

Superannuation non-concessional contributions are after-tax contributions that you make to your super fund. These are contributions you make using money that has already been taxed.

There is no tax on these contributions when they are paid into your super, but there is a cap for how much you can contribute.

For the 2024-25 year, the non-concessional contributions cap is $120,000, with some people able to bring forward three years’ worth of caps if they are under 75 and meet certain conditions.

4. Personal Undeducted Contributions

Similar to non-concessional contributions, undeducted contributions refer to after-tax contributions made to your super that you don’t claim a tax deduction for.

These could be voluntary contributions you make from your savings or earnings, or amounts already taxed, such as a lump sum from selling an asset.

These contributions do not count toward the concessional contribution cap, and they are not taxed when they enter your super fund.

5. Superannuation Guarantee (SG)

The Superannuation Guarantee (SG) is the minimum amount your employer must contribute to your super fund on your behalf.

The current SG rate is 11.5% of your ordinary time earnings, and it applies to most employees. SG contributions are considered concessional because they are made before tax is paid, and they count towards your concessional contribution cap.

Types of Superannuation Funds

There are three main types of super funds in Australia: industry super funds, retail super funds, and self-managed super funds (SMSFs). Each type has different features, benefits, and drawbacks. Therefore, understanding these differences is important when choosing the best option for your retirement savings.

1. Industry Superannuation Funds

Simple, Default Option. Industry super funds were originally created for workers in specific industries, though most are now open to everyone.

industry superannuation funds

Pros:

  • Simpler compared to many retail funds
  • Usually, the default option when starting employment
  • Simple investment options

Cons:

  • Lack of transparency in relation to how your money is invested
  • Limited investment choice, often just pre-set investment options
  • Less access to personalised financial advice
  • Can lack flexibility for those wanting greater control over their investments.

2. Retail Superannuation Funds

More Choice, Flexibility, and Professional Management.
Retail super funds operate on a for-profit basis, meaning they generate returns for shareholders. However, they also provide greater investment flexibility and access to expert financial advice.

Pros:

  • Wider investment choices, including managed funds, direct shares, and ethical options
  • Tailored financial advice with access to professional guidance for investment strategies
  • Customisable investment strategy, suitable for different risk levels
  • Advanced features such as pension accounts and transition-to-retirement strategies

Cons:

  • Investment options may be complex

3. Self Managed Super Funds (SMSFs)

Full Control, High Responsibility
A Self-Managed Super Fund (SMSF) lets people take full control of their superannuation. It allows them to invest in assets such as property, direct shares, and private businesses. However, with control comes responsibility—SMSF members must comply with strict legal and tax regulations.

self manage super funds

Pros:

  • Full control over investment decisions
  • Ability to invest in unique assets, including property and collectibles
  • Potential tax benefits and estate planning advantages

Cons:

  • High setup and ongoing costs, including accounting, legal, and audit fees
  • Significant legal responsibilities and compliance requirements
  • Time-consuming, requiring active management and financial knowledge

Why It's Important To Ensure Your Superannuation Is Invested According To Your Wishes

Aligns with Your Financial Goals

Your superannuation investment strategy should match your personal and retirement goals. If you want higher long-term growth, you might prefer a high-growth or aggressive investment option. If you are close to retirement, a more conservative or balanced strategy may be more suitable to protect your savings from market volatility.

Manages Investment Risk

Different superannuation funds and investment options come with varying levels of risk. Some funds invest heavily in shares, property, and international markets, while others focus on cash and fixed-interest investments. Understanding where your money is going helps ensure your super is positioned appropriately for your risk tolerance and stage of life.

Maximises Potential Returns

Superannuation is a long-term way to save money. Selecting the right investment plan can make a big difference in how much money you have when you retire. By choosing a well-balanced mix of assets, your super can grow at a pace that aligns with your retirement needs.

Avoids Unnecessary Fees and Poor Performance

Some superannuation funds charge higher fees for active management, while others have lower-cost index investment options. If you are unaware of how your super is invested, you might be paying excessive fees for underperforming investments. Hence, reviewing your super helps ensure you are getting good value and strong returns.

Provides Financial Security in Retirement

Your superannuation balance at retirement will determine your quality of life in later years. Making sure your investments are growing effectively guarantees you have enough funds to support yourself, maintain your lifestyle, and cover unexpected expenses.

Ensuring your super is invested the way you want gives you more control over your money. It also helps you reach the retirement lifestyle you dream of.

Final Thoughts:

If you want a mix of good returns, expert management, and investment options that suit you, Retail Super Funds are a great choice. They give you flexibility, professional advice, and many investment options to help grow your retirement savings.

I don't even know where to start! Our husband and I engaged Goran at Mint Lane following a family recommendation, after we had an awful experience with previous advisors. In the past, there was no communication, no plans made or developed, very little discussions since an initial meeting and 5 years on we are no further along than we were when we first engaged them. It had been frustrating to say the least. Since the moment I reached out to Goran, our experience has been the polar opposite from the get go. Absolute chalk and cheese experiences. Goran has been proactive with every aspect of the process from day one, he's been engaging, communicates every part of the process and in a short amount of time, we are significantly further along than we ever have been before. We couldn't recommend Goran and Mint Lane enough!!

Working with Travis and Mint Lane has been, literally, a load off my shoulders. They are reliant, trustworthy and know their business. I am in the process of retiring, and I only have a reasonable amount of money for them to work with and create a positive income that will meet my needs and caters for me throughout my future. They involve me in all decision makings and have been supportive in all areas. I look forward to having a positive partnership with them throughout my many years of retirement. I would recommend Travis and Mint Lane to anyone who is wanting financial advice, support, and commitment. Even my alpacas have been included into the calculations of my retirement.

Goran has been a huge help in getting me started with managing my finances. As someone who’s just 20 and new to the world of finance, I wasn’t sure where to start. Goran made everything easy to understand and took the time to walk me through each step. He helped me open my first investment account and put together a realistic plan for my future goals. He’s approachable, knowledgeable, and really takes the time to understand what you’re aiming for. I feel much more confident about my financial direction now, and I’m glad I found someone I can trust early on. Would definitely recommend!

We are both in our 50s and as we near retirement thought it would be wise to seek some financial advice to make our money work harder for us and make wise decisions to pay the mortgage off to downsize to a smaller more modern house / unit and set up our retirement for a more comfortable retirement life. We met with Travis and instantly felt we had made the right decision. Travis explains everything in simple terms for us to understand and genuinely wants to better our investment and see us reach our retirement goal.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Superannuation is a way to save money for retirement while you work. Your employer puts a percentage of your earnings—at least 11.5%—into a super account, where it’s invested to help it grow over time. This money stays in your super until you retire, giving you a financial cushion for the future.

You can access your super once you reach your preservation age, which is between 55 and 60 depending on your birth year, and you’ve retired. If you’re still working, you can withdraw it when you turn 65. There are also special situations, like financial hardship or serious illness, where you may be able to access it sooner.

You may be able to access your super early to pay off debt, but only in certain situations, like severe financial hardship. The money can usually only be used for overdue bills related to essential needs, such as rent or electricity, and not for paying off future debts or loans. Since your super is meant for retirement, it’s a good idea to look at other options first before withdrawing.

Yes, you can use your super to buy a house, but there are some rules to keep in mind. Here are three ways you might be able to do it:

  • First Home Super Saver (FHSS) Scheme – If you’re buying your first home, you can withdraw extra super contributions you’ve made to help with your deposit.
  • Self-Managed Super Fund (SMSF) – If you set up your own super fund, you can use it to buy an investment property, but not a home to live in.
  • After Retirement – Once you reach the age where you can access your super (currently 60 and retired or 65 even if still working), you can use it to buy a home or pay off your mortgage

Start managing your super wisely for a secure and comfortable retirement
